The Club

Brief History

The Club is the oldest continuously running organisation and the premier cricket club in the Rogerstone area. The original cricket played in Rogerstone was made up largely of the immigrants from Shropshire who came to Rogerstone with the steel industry. The first known evidence of the works team was in a programme of a fundraising concert held in 1888. This team were the inaugural winners of the Newport and district League, the first cricket league in the Monmouthshire area. The name of the current Club changed from Rogerstone to Rogerstone Welfare in 1929 when the Welfare Grounds were opened and the Club was invited to use the grounds by the then Parish Council. Among the first Presidents of the Club were Lord Tredegar and Lord and Lady Forrestier-Walker.

In November 2007 the Club gained the prestigious ECB/Cricket Board of Wales Clubmark Accreditation award. This award recognizes the Clubs organization and procedures as being a safe place for children to play cricket. The Club was the 10th club in South East Wales to achieve this award. The Club is now also an ECB Focus Club.

The Club Today

The Club today is a very progressive and ambitious club whose aims are to foster cricket at all levels irrespective of creed and sex in Rogerstone. In the 2002 season the club won both the South Wales Cricket Conference League and cup, and were finalists in the Lord’s cup final at Sophia gardens. In 2003, the 1st X1 were champions of the South Wales Cricket League Division 2 at the first attempt and the 2nd X1 gained promotion as runners up in their league. In 2004 the 1st X1 were runners-up in the South Wales League Division 1 and one of our newly formed youth teams, the under 11’s finished joint runners - up in the Gwent League West Division. In 2007 our under 13’s A side finished runners up in the West Division. In 2008 our under 13’s A side went one better and won the Division 1 West league while our under 13’s B finished runners–up in the reserve division. At under 15's level our A and B teams were joint winners of Gwent Division 1 West.

Facilities

Our facilities at the Welfare Grounds are second to none. Thanks to a grant from SportsLot (National Lottery - via Sports Council for Wales) a new two storey pavilion was opened in 1998. We have since further improved facilities with the purchase of a motor roller , new sheets for the sight screens , roll on covers for the wicket and roll on roll off practice nets. This was achieved with the help of a bank loan, magnificent support from our sponsors, the Community Council, Newport Borough Council, our vice presidents, members of the community and various fund raising events. Thanks to the Community Council we also have an excellent all-weather pitch which ensures a consistent and safe cricket pitch for youth cricketers of all age groups. In 2005 we completed the pavilion , as originally designed , by adding a balcony which was previously cost prohibitive. This was a considerable strain on our finances which was eased by a grant from Newport City Church Acts Fund.

In 2006 we enhanced the pavilion with the addition of a state of the art electronic scoreboard. In 2007 we added two off the field practice nets and a bowling machine

Quality Improvement Plan

Our emphasis is to continue build on our youth policy. With respect to youth cricket . Last year we held practice sessions every Monday Tuesday and Friday throughout the summer. During the close season two more senior members to be trained as level 2 cricket coaches. In 2009 season an under 17’s development team will be added to the existing five youth teams. We believe this to be our major investment for the future and an important service to the community. Winter nets and coaching for our young players, will again be at Rougemont School. 16 players were put forward for Gwent coaching, a club record. As previously stated we have the best cricket facilities in the area and our cricket is played in a setting second to none in Gwent.

Local School Partnerships

The partnerships with Mount Pleasant and Rogerstone (Cefn Wood) primary schools and Bassaleg Comprehensive school will again operate under the very successful ECB/Cricket Board of Wales Chance to Shine programme. In 2009 it is intended to add High Cross and Pentre Porth primary schools to the scheme. This programme involves in curriculum coaching. after school cricket clubs, matches and holiday camps at the Welfare Grounds. Through the programme the Club was able to obtain Ł1000’s worth of playground markings for Rogerstone primary school at no cost to the school

Finance

We are a self financing club and as you will appreciate we have increasing financial outlays due to maintenance of our facilities and equipment throughout the year and have heavy costs of staging a cricket match. Our expenses will increase considerably next season with the running of our youth teams and our efforts to provide youth cricket at minimal cost.

We are looking for sponsors to help minimise these costs. There are several ways of offering sponsorship:

Code of Conduct

All Members and Guests of Rogerstone Welfare Cricket Club will:

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person within the context of Cricket.
Treat everyone equally and not discriminate on the grounds of age, gender, disability, race, ethnic origin, nationality, colour, parental or marital status, religious belief, class or social background, sexual preference or political belief.
Not condone, or allow to go unchallenged, any form of discrimination if witnessed.
Display high standards of behaviour.
Promote the positive aspects of Cricket e.g. fair play.
Encourage all participants to learn the Laws and rules and play within them, respecting the decisions of match officials.
Actively discourage unfair play, rule violations and arguing with match officials.
Recognise good performance not just match results.
Place the well-being and safety of Young People above the development of performance.
Ensure that activities are appropriate for the age, maturity, experience and ability of the individual
Respect Young People’s opinions when making decisions about their participation in Cricket.
Not smoke, drink or use banned substances whilst actively working with Young People in the Club.
Not provide Young People with alcohol when they are under the care of the Club.
Follow ECB guidelines set out in the “Safe Hands – Cricket’s Policy for Safeguarding Children’ and any other relevant guidelines issued
Report any concerns in relation to a Young Person, following reporting procedures laid down by the ECB
In addition to the above, all Club Officers and Appointed Volunteers will:

Hold relevant qualifications and be covered by appropriate insurance.
Always work in an open environment (i.e. avoid private or unobserved situations and encourage an open environment).
Inform Players and Parents of the requirements of Cricket
Know and understand the ECB’s "Safe Hands – Cricket’s Policy for Safeguarding Children"
