What Is Chance to shine?

"Chance to shine is the Cricket Foundation’s drive to bring competitive cricket to state schools."

"Chance to shine is addressing the decline in competitive school cricket. It is the single biggest sports-development initiative ever undertaken in the UK, Chance to shine will reach one third of all schools in England and Wales over ten years and engage two million young people."

What is the aim of Chance to shine?

"Our main focus is squarely on the education and well-being of young people. We think cricket, the ultimate team game, has a big role to play in this and we intend to restore our summer game to more than a third of state schools within ten years. We want to put in high-quality, sustainable cricket programmes that can make a lasting impact."

How does Chance to shine work?

"The Chance to shine campaign is broken down into individual projects which revolve around the activities of one cricket club and a cluster of schools located in the close vicinity of the cricket club."

"ECB-qualified coaches engaged by the cricket clubs deliver our structured programme of coaching and competition, as well as Summer Camps during school holidays. The coaching and competition programme is supplemented by training for teachers and coaches, provision of cricket equipment and facility development."

Chance to shine at RWCC

Rogerstone Welfare Cricket Club joined the Chance to shine scheme in 2008. Initially the club was allocated 140 coaching hours, setting up partnerships with Rogerstone and Mount Pleasant primary schools (years 5 and 6) and Bassaleg secondary school (year 7). In 2009 our allocated coaching hours have been expanded to 190, allowing us to create a new partnership with High Cross primary school.

The club's Chance to shine objective is to to regenerate cricket in the schools and to provide a pathway to club cricket and beyond for young cricketers. We are achieving this objective by supplying our partner schools with ECB-qualified coaches, who provide curriculum coaching sessions. We also provide after school clubs and coaching sessions at the club ground to all interested children.

As part of the Chance to shine scheme Rogerstone Welfare Cricket Club have managed to secure playground markings worth £1000 for Rogerstone Primary School and are planning to put the same markings in High Cross and Mount Pleasant Primary Schools this year.
